The primitive Guarene settlement was placed in the river Tanaro’s plain, at the foot of the hill on which stands the present village. The desire of looking for a safer and a more defensible place, brought the community to move their settlement at the foot of the castle that already dominated the hill, on which is located the current village of Guarene.
The territory of Barbaresco was inhabited since prehistoric times. At that time the beautiful and fertile hills of our town were covered by thick forests with some rare green space along the banks of the river Tanaro and there lived the barbarian people of Liguri Stazielli.
The Liguri were rough and strong people and had a sacred forest dedicated to the divinity of the strength, called “Martiningen” in Celtic. With the arrival of the Romans, the area was then dedicated to Mars, the God of war.
There were giant oaks growing on this land, a symbol of strength and endurance, surrounded by salt-water springs that still exist today.
